jobs for writers

I’m currently enrolled in college for a pre-veterinary major, however, I find myself less interested in medicine now and more interested in writing. I have always loved writing, whether for my own pleasure or for school… everything from short stories to essays. I want to have a family someday though and need a job that can support these desires, so I am wondering, what sort of jobs are offered to writers… I was wondering if anyone can tell me a bit about technical writing? I want to write stories on the side, but know that is not very reliable income, especially at first.
If anyone has any input, I would love to hear. Thanks!

But I don’t know if that is practical. I had her move to NY and end up with a job as a freelance writer. Do magazines and/or newspapers hire freelancers often? And if so, is this a job that is more at the bottom of the field than say beign an editor or something? Thanks.

freelance writer job

I love writing, whether it’s fantasy, science fiction or a factual piece, I just love it. There’s not an awful lot of jobs in my area for writers so I am thinking about starting up online. I have seen some marketplaces where people will post an advert saying writer wanted to complete content on website etc etc. Most of the people that use these sites have LOTS of previous work they can give as an example. This is great but makes it hard for someone like me to actually get started, so I’d be really grateful for any advice. I could also use a few links to sites like I mentioned above where I can check for work regularly. If I am able to contact someone posting an advert early I might be able to pursuade them to use me, although I don’t have any previous examples of work.

Thanks again guys and gals, I really appreciate all your help.

How common is the full-time writer? Don’t most book writers have day-jobs or other careers to make money, and just write on the side? I’ve aspired to be a writer since I was very young, and I had this delusion that, the writer’s life was a glamorous one, from all the successes you hear from best-selling authors. I was under the impression, that that’s all a writer’s life would entail, just writing.

So, realistically, what is the life of a writer?

I’ve read Robert Bly’s “Secrets of a Freelance Writer,” Peter Bowerman’s “The Well-Fed Writer,” and most recently, Jenna Glatzer’s “Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer” … as you may imagine, my head is spinning from the wealth of information and advice in those books.

What should I do first? Should I contact companies, as Bly and Bowerman suggest, or magazines and websites, as Glatzer recommends? Do I need to have my company established before contacting anyone? And what about freelance writing websites–can I really make money from jobs posted there?

I am a shy, introvert person. I have little qualities beyond writing. I prefer indoors life so I am looking for some job to do from home, something creative. I hate routine…

I think I write nice stuff, miniatures are my specialty… short pieces of poetry, prose sketches, rhymed lines…

English is not my native language but I understand and use it quite well… I think…

Could I use my writing skills somehow, in a simple way for a beginner? How should I start? Any advice would help. Thank you.
